This is an extremely rare folding screen depicting two Western dogs, likely originally a hanging scroll that was converted into a folding screen.

At the time, Western dogs were highly unusual, and the elaborate collars suggest they were greatly prized. As a folding screen, it is also exceptionally rare.

A folding screen is made of multiple boards attached with paper or silk and connected with hinges, and can be folded. They were used as room partitions, wind shields, decorations for ceremonies and rituals, and for viewing as works of art.Originally, they were placed on the floor at an angle, but today they are often spread straight out and displayed on the wall like a painting. The most popular type is the one with a picture painted on the front on a gold leaf background. The size and color of the gold leaf differs depending on the period, and the period is considered from the natural mineral pigments used and the composition of the painting.
