A folding screen is made of multiple boards attached with paper or silk and connected with hinges, and can be folded. They were used as room partitions, wind shields, decorations for ceremonies and rituals, and for viewing as works of art.Originally, they were placed on the floor at an angle, but today they are often spread straight out and displayed on the wall like a painting. The most popular type is the one with a picture painted on the front on a gold leaf background. The size and color of the gold leaf differs depending on the period, and the period is considered from the natural mineral pigments used and the composition of the painting.

This small folding screen is unusually composed of eight panels, featuring a gold cloud motif that builds to a climax and a ground pattern of Linked Circles Pattern designs.
The depiction of the crane’s face and feathers is rendered in minute detail, with sand-like gold texture applied, making it an exceptionally elaborate piece. It likely represents a specially commissioned work.
