The fabric is of fine quality, well-refined, and the cobalt used is of the high grade seen in Kakiemon kiln. It depicts golden lace and reeds, while the reverse side features wild grapes.
The skillful use of cobalt blue’s gradations creates a sense of depth, while the areas painted lightly without defined outlines showcase a rare technique demonstrating high technical skill.
The rim rises gently, the foot is high and slightly inward-sloping, with four carefully placed foot marks inside the foot rim.
The balance of blank space, the refined composition, and the high-quality painting and shaping all convey the exceptional quality of this plate’s origins.

Imari ware is the generic name for porcelain produced in Hizen Province (modern-day Saga and Nagasaki Prefectures), centred on Arita-machi, Saga Prefecture, where porcelain production is said to have begun in the 1610s when Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought back Ri Sanpei, who discovered ceramic stones used to make porcelain in the Izumiyama area of Arita. The name derives from Imaritsu (port), the port of shipment of porcelain.

Imari ware was the first domestically produced porcelain in Japan, as before that time only pottery made from clay and fired at low temperatures were produced in Japan.
